. . ."The advent of the Army and Navy - taking the place
of the fish industry is something to really think about because
so much has been invested in real estate."
Carrie Georgina had come to Pacific Grove with an invalid
husband in 1924. He died shortly after, as a result of an auto-
mobile accident, leaving her with a small boy, Lionel, to
support. First, she thought she might start a nursery school
but she abandoned those plans when the opportunity to work
at the Pine Grove sanitarium presented itself.
Her husband laughs: "She wanted to take care of children,
so I gave her the opportunity with my four."
Of her former employer, Dr. Hart, Mrs. Ryan speaks with
fondness: "He and Mrs. Hart used part of their house at 649
Lighthouse Avenue to help out folks, from young babies up,
who needed medical attention for a few days and could not
get to the county hospital which at that time was not very
attractive."
It was Dr. Hart, too, who with W. R. Holman was respon-
sible for the Pacific Grove cut-off, the road to the Carmel hill.
"Dr. Hart and Mr. Holman," Mrs. Ryan recalls, "walked that
way every day, to establish the route for the road from Pacific
Grove to Carmel hill."
She might look up, still with those sparkling delphinium
blue eyes, from a letter that she is writing to a relative in
England, and continue on her reminiscences of Pacific Grove:
"Another old house which is so much a part of Pacific
Grove to us 'oldtimers' is the more formal home of Judge
Jorgenson whose son is now our city attorney. It must have
been built by the late Judge about eighty years ago-a grand
family home, compared to the little old houses built on the tent
sites for summer renters.
"Recently it seemed to disappear into thin air. Another
blank space for awhile-now another modern professional
building is on the way-a neighbor to the Canterbury Woods
retirement homes.
"They, incidentally, are built on the site of what once was a
retirement home for Episcopalian ministers. I believe it *was
