LaConner Coach
Jack Whittaker», the dean of
Northwest Washington prep bas-
ketball coaches, has announced his
retirement as LaConner’s cage
pilot. He will devote his time
to his position as school superin-
tendent. Increased enrollment at
LaConner has added to the bur-
den of the administrative post.
Whittaker has coached basket—
ball for 33 years. He took his .,
first post at Granite Falls in 1922
and the little school, with such
stars as the Curtis brothers and
Gunnar Engstrom, he beat Everett j‘
two straight seasons to take the
bountytitle and went to the state
at the University of Washln
and from there he went to Gran
ville, Idaho. A short time later
Whittaker transferred. to Ediso
where he coached the ingpor
for 15 years, leaving there
Conner when Edison merged w
Burlington High School. He sen
two Edison fives to the state meet.
Whittaker met with success at 3
‘little LaConner. His Braves were
an annual Tri-County League
threat. His teams got into every
Class B Tournament but one and '
two went to the State B tourna.
