Edgar Napier, vice-president of
college operations, said when "we get a
plan of action from the foreign language
faculty with the management in that area,
then that's when we will consider it. Right
now there is no identified deficiencies."
But those deficiencies were identified
last June in a "Foreign language
Assessment Report" completed by the
foreign language department, signed by
Earl Farris, assistant dean of Humanities
and Arts and passed on to Institutional
Assessment and Jeff Stuckman.
Although Farris did receive a copy of e
the report, he said, "You are better off with
fifty or sixty thousand dollars that gets you
locked into something of the future, than to
spend $150,000 on a dinosaur. I'm trying

The knee—jerk reaction would have been to
take this report and say, ‘My goodness lets
go ahead and order Califones and the same
Apple computers and the same software,’
without regard to is this really where we
want to be three or four years from now, or
even two years from now."
Farris claimed he did not know about
the available money through SA 506A, and
added, "If I had known that the money was
there, I still would have recommended that
we not spend it."
Napier agreed with Farris that the
money should not be spent on something
that may not be the best for the students.
Munoz also agreed "that some of the
equipment identified in the report is

Jacksonville is still without adequate labs
according to the instructors, even though
FCCJ received $154,179 to meet
deficiencies in those labs. As reported in
,TCV on January 16, 1989, FCCJ received
the funds through Specific Appropriation
506A passed by the Florida State ~
Legislature. These funds, according to the
“language in the legislation, were to be
used to meet those deficiencies identified
in the foreign language labs.
Karen-Jean Munoz, foreign language
professor, said "We have a crucial need at
both North and Downtown because neither
, one of those has a decent language support
system for foreign language students. That
means no hardware and practically no
software. Our immediate, crucial needs are
,_,at=those two campuses."

Smith said, "We certainly have deficiencies
in terms of no labs on certain campuses and
L labs that are very lacking in software on
gathereampuses."

Califone is phasing out."
However, she added, "We didn't know
that last June, but it should be obvious
from this report that even if we don't
pinpoint which items of equipment we
need, that we still have great needs."
Munoz continued, "The naming of
much of the equipment specifically was
requested by Mr. Farris because he was
actually overlooking this report, but you
don't have to tie it down to a specific make
of anything; the needs were identified and
then we made suggestions of what to go
with."
Farris said that no matter what the
deficiencies are that have been identified
he still "would not authorize anything to be
in place until next fall because there are a
lot of questions that need to be asked."
According to Farris those questions are:

Led by Maria Teal and Demeira Adams the Lady Stars are not only
number 1 in the state, but also in the nation. The Lady Stars have never
been ranked number 1 upon entering the State/Regional Tournament, ’
which is held this year in Pensacola, Florida on February 23-25. Over
the past three years the highest ranking they have achieved has been
number 3. ‘
FCCJ Coach Lyndal Worth said, "What the National Poll means is
that we are the team that should win. It's a great compliment to our
program and our school to even be considered one of the'top five teams
in the nation."
Worth said, "We don‘t focus our attention on one particular game.
We will prepare for the State/Regional Tournament the same way we
prepare for any other game. It doesn't matter who we are playing or
what the circumstances may be." . ,
Coach Worth continued, "We canonly take being nationally ranked
so far. In order for us to win the National Championship we will have to
take it one step at a time." , '
