RE: 895 Ocean View Blvd.
Message:
Hi Judy.
In a fax sent to Jon Biggs on 11/14/95, I requested that 895 Ocean View Blvd. be added to the Historic
Resource List. I based my request on the fact that the house was built in 1921, according to the tax
assessor's records, and it obviously looks old. There is no Sanborn map for this portion of the Beach
Tract. The owner was notified and he responded with a request to delay the addition of the house to the
list.
Since that request, other information has surfaced from the City's records and maps as well as records
obtained from the County by the owner. This new information clearly shows the original footprint (1921
through 1928) to be an almost square shaped structure roughly one-half the size of the current structure.
This information also details major additions to both sides and the rear in 1928, 1929, 1932 and 1945,
which account for its current footprint. It appears that these additions, although legally done at the time,
were done in a haphazard, sub-standard manner. These additions, along with long-time owner neglect and
subsequent litigation, have allowed the entire structure to deteriorate significantly. The last residents
lived in the house from 1955 through 1986 (1988?)and did little more than routine maintenance on the
structure. Since then, the house has stood vacant, except for occasional weekend/vacation usage by the
current owner, the son of the previous owners.
In a meeting with you and the owner, Gordon Abbott and his attorney Quentin Smith on February 1,
1996, we reviewed all the above information. As a result, the owner has requested that the house not be
added to the list.
