In the past Social Networking involved joining groups with shared interests. You shared ideas, prob- lems, and goals. Our society is such a net- work. The new frontier is social networking on the internet. This new style allows us to inter- act with people any- where in the world that share our interests. Some of the sites were set up for particular interests, others have different factions where people have joined into smaller groups with shared interests. Just like in our community of Shelton. To learn this new style you will need to learn about RSS (Really Simple Syndi- cation), and tags. Both of these help in your research. RSS keeps you updated with any changes on designated sites. Tags help you find that page again without having to wade through all the „finds‟ that a search engine will give you. Blogs— these are websites that show new content at the top of the page, older con- tent is further down on the page, and even older content is ar- chived on other linked pages. Wiki— a website that allows multiple people to create/edit the pages without having to know special format- ting language. One fa- mous site is Wikipedia. You can share docu- ments, photo/videos. There is social book- marking, sharing of personal libraries and podcasts. MySpace, FaceBook are sites for socializing for its own sake. You can also keep up with family through these sites. Share your daily life, photos, etc. with them. A newer type of site is a virtual world. One that is popular is called Second Life.
