nan in recognltlon of his 53 years of dlstlngulshed service to Callfor-
nla Banldng. This presentation will be part Of an Impressive
ceremony in wtuch 30 banking ploneers who have given 50 years or
more actlve service to Callfomla banking will partlclpate.
Mr. Smith has been president of the Security State Bank ln Pacmc
Circyve for 53 years. He onganlzed the Bank of E. Cooke Smlth ln
1889. The name of thls ln§tltutlon was later changed to Security
State Bank. Among other posltlons. he `ras Paclflc Grove.s first clty
clerk.
In additlon to his banking actlvitles, Mr. Smith has been nquldator of
Western Paclflc Mortgage & Guarantee Company and Western Group
Securities Company for 17 years. He has played an Important part
ln civic affairs ln Pacmc Grove, having been a member of the city
Council for 29 years, during part of whleh time he served as Chalr-
man of The Board. He ls president of the Pacmc Grove Museum.

Whorl Mr. Smith founded his bank in 1889. he ran lt from his real es-
tate once ln a small building at 569 IJghthouse. As the bank be-
came more successful, he sold his real estate business to A E.
Bunker in 1897. In 1905. he demollshed his small wooden balik and
bullt his nenr bank, sull §tandlng on the comer Of Llghthousc &
Forest (see photo on next page). He rented out space to Mr. Bunker
for his real estate once. His mother, Mrs. Celia Dlckinson Smith,
uved upstalTs unut her death at age 83 ln 1918. Fhobably because of
her son.a real estate and banking connections, Mrs. Smith built alid
owned Inany homes in early Pacmc Grove. You will notlce her name,
Mrs. C,D. Smith, on some of our plaques ln town.
Mr. Smith was prestdent of the Chalnber of Commerce untn he was
elected to the City.s Board of Thstees ln 1913, He married Patricla
Hardwlck (lmown as Polly) of Olympia, Washington ln 1917 alid they
made their home at 609 Glbson. In 1922, his bank became the
Security State Bank and his bulldlng now houses the Fust Interstate
Bank. He died ln early 1946 at age 84. His granddaughter now lives
in Olympia.
