E” David Harold McClary
DaVid H McClary passed away January 3 2005, in Sheltoni Washington at age
70‘ after a long battle With
Parkinson 5 disease He moved to Alpine Way Retirement Community in Shelton
four years ago. but lived in
Brooklyn New York the maiority of his adult life He was a scholar and
taught English as a second language
He was able to speak read and translate in twenty different languages.
David's parents were the late Hat and Roberta McCIary of Olympia,
Anacortes and Shelton His older brother
Douglas preceded him in death in 1982 He is survived by his nephews Coleman
McClary of Oceanside,
California Cameron McClary of Sheltoni and his nieces Carlin Johnson of
Cary, North Carolina, and Cathleen
LudWIg‘ of Waukesha. Wisconsin
DaVid was a remarkable person He attended Lincoln Grade School in Olympia,
and graduated from Olympia
High School in 1952 as salutatonan of his class He lettered in football,
basketball and baseball Band was
awarded the Michigan Trophy in recognition of his excellence in academics
athletics and school activtties He
also received the Rotary inspirational Award for the football player
shOWing the best sportsmanship,
Davtd graduated from the UniverSity of Washington with a degree in History
in 1956. He was a member of the
Husky basketball and baseball teams. Phi Delta Theta Fraternity and Purple
Shield (an honorary organization
recognizing leaders for their scholarship and extracurricular activities)
In his senior year he was chosen to be
in the Oval Club and Big W
David “Rusty" was liked by all who knew him He was a brilliant
scholar‘ musician and accomplished athlete,
He was a gentle soul His mother and father befriended his grade school and
high school classmates His
father started the first independent basketball team (MAC s Club) in
Olympia for grade school boys, which
helped to build character and develop their interest in athletics All of
his friends are better people due to their
kinship With Davrd and to the graciousness of David‘s parents He Will be
deeply missed but never forgotten
by those who were fortunate enough to know him
A memorial sewice Will be held at the Hope Chapel, 421 W, “E" St. in
Shelton on Tuesday‘ January 11 at
11'00am The serVice Will be preceded by a short committal service at
the Oddfellows Cemetery in Olympia
at 9:00am. Arrangements are under the direction of McComb Funeral Home
