Damon La June
Damon Millard La June, a
Harstine Island resident and at
one time a smoke jumper for the
U.S. Forest Service, died of cancer
Monday, May 17, at Saint Peter
Hospital in Olympia. He was 71.
He was born April 29, 1928, in
Carbonado to Charles and Pearl
La June. The family later moved
to Seattle and he graduated from
O’Dea High School in 1946.
Raised during the Depression,
Mr. La June learned the value of
a dollar and not to shirk from
work, his family said, He proved
that by working alongside his fa-
ther in coal mines and putting all
of his earnings into the family
fund.
After high school, he worked
for the US Forest Service as a
smoke jumper and trail builder in
Idaho and Montana.
In 1947, he joined the U.S. Air
Force, serving in the 353rd Bomb
Squadron, and later was dis-
charged with the rank of ser-
geant.
He Worked as a mail carrier,
bank and drugstore courier, then
went to work for Standard Oil
and worked in several service sta-
tions before having his own Sta,
tion on Capital Hill in Seattle.
During the 1970s many sta-

lines of work, including real es»
tate sales and yard and home
maintenance. That led him to
Shelton, where he met and mar-
ried Barbara Singer in 1984‘
In the 15 years he lived on
Harstine Island, he organized
many events for the residents and
the island. Those included holi-
day dinners, the Saturday Farm-
er’s Market, Memorial Day
spaghetti dinner, honored-citi—
zens awards at the October Fest
and senior-citizen dinners.
His interests included camping
on his property in Prince George,
British Columbia, Canada, and
reading, dancing, cooking, pinoch-
1e, gardening and sports.
He was preceded in death by
his parents, Charles and Pearl La
June, and his brother, Calvin La
June.
He is survived by his wife, Bar-
bara La June of Harstine Island;
sons Monty La June of Oak Har-
bor, Marc La June of Seattle and
Mike La June of Snoqualmie;
daughters Michelle Casteneda of
Everett, Marlene La June of Seat»
tie, and Mya Mendas of Evere
brother Milton La June of King-
ston; sisters Charlotte Garrow of
Portland, Oregon, Colleen La
June of Portland, Oregon, Lor-
raine Brown of Redding, Califor-
nia; nine grandchildren and three
greateg'randchildren,
A memorial service was held
on May 22 at the Harstine Island
Community Hall. Inurnment will
he at the Harstine Island Ceme-
tery.
Memorial donations may be
sent to the Harstine Island Com-
munity Hall, 3371 East Hart-
stene Island Road North, Shelton
98584, or to a charity of the
donor’s choice.
