Arnie Livingston /N{ / 1‘14? Arnold Livingston Arnold Roger “Arnie" Living- ston, a longtime Shelton resident and community activist, died of natural causes Tuesday, April 14, at Fir Lane Health and Rehabili‘ tation Center in Shelton. He was 83. He was born December 14, 1914, in Seattle and raised in Shelton by his mother, Pearl Ar- neson, and grandparents, Frank and Minna Livingston. He graduated from Irene S. Reed High School in Shelton in 1932. He played on the football and baseball teams in high school and was a member of the letter» men’s club. He was active in the Boy Scouts, earning a number of merit badges. After graduation Mr. Living- ston and his friend, Alfie Knee- land, hopped freight trains and road the rails across the country. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He served in England and was in charge of the communications branch of the 453rd Squadron. He helped rescue downed bomber crews in the English Channel. While in England, Corporal Livingston served with James Stewart, the late Hollywood actor. “He was just a great gentleman,” Mr. Livingston said at the time Stewart died. “As far as a movie actor goes, he was one of my heroes.” After the war, Mr. Livingston returned to Shelton. He married Cecelia Velasquez on June 29, 1947, in Kamilche. He worked for Simpson Timber Company and retired as business agent for the International Wood- workers of America Local 3-38. Fishing was one of his favorite pastimes. He fished many of the local waters and fished in Cana- da. He also enjoyed swimming and taught area Boy Scouts how to swim during hikes to Lena Lake in the Olympic Mountains He also liked hunting and helping kids out whenever he could. In January 1982, he was named Mason County Citizen of the Year, the first local person so honored. His accomplishments included: president of Mason County Blood Council, president of Kiwanis Club of Mason County Seniors, vice president of Mason County Housing Authority; board mem- ber of United Way of Mason County, Mason County Chapter of the American Cancer Society, Mason County Jail Advisory Committee, Retired Senior Volun- teer Program Advisory Board, Mason-Thurston Alcoholism Ad- visory Board, United Good Neigh- bors and Mason County Senior Activities Association. Seniors and their welfare were important to him, and he lobbied passionate- ly for them in Olympia. He was state Democratic com- mitteeman from Mason County, Democratic precinct committee- man and longtime member of the Mason County Democratic Cen» tral Committee. He is survived by wife Cecelia Livingston of Shelton; and special friends Laura Studer of Shelton and Joyce McCormick of Selah, A memorial service will he held at 10 a.mi Friday, April 24, at Saint Edward’s Catholic Church in Shelton officiated by the Rever— end Dominic Hahn, Order of Saint Benedict A reception will follow next door at Saint David’s Episcopal Church.
