These 14 wrestlers along with five state alternates who placed fifth  at regionals for the Vi- kings will compete at the Mat Classic held February 16  and 17 at the Tacoma Dome. The Vikings are seeking their 12 team championship at this year’s Mat Classic.    Final top five team placing at Regionals: First place Lake Stevens 310.5, second place Auburn Riverside 172.0, third place Enumclaw 106.0, fourth place Auburn Mountain View 95.5 and in fifth place Decatur 86.0. Viking wrestlers who will be competing at State. Viking boys suffered a very tough loss in their District open- er at Jackson, 63-61 in overtime, while the girls won easily, as ex- pected, 68-25 over Mariner at Marysville-Pilchuck. At Jackson 63, Lake boys 61 -- Overtime  (February 8) This was yet another of the down-to-the-wire losses Lake has been dealt by Jackson in late-season play the past few years.   Lake got off to a solid start, scoring 14 straight points to take a 14-4 lead.  After missing its first two shots Lake made seven of eight, including two threes by Ryder Kavanagh and one by De- rik Myers.  But that was the end of Lake›s hot shooting for the evening, as the Vikings finished the game at 37%. Viking basketball: Boys nipped, girls roll in district openers Kavanagh’s 10 first quarter points led Lake to a 17-13 lead. Threes by Jesse King and Thaddeus Newman paced Lake to a 30-21 lead late in the third quarter but surrendered eight straight points to the Timber- wolves to lead by just 30-29 at halftime. Lake has been plagued by poor third quarters all season and this game was no excep- tion as Jackson pulled ahead by 43-38 entering the fourth. Viking defense clamped down in the fourth quarter, holding Jackson to six total points, but Lake’s offense was frustrated by poor shooting.  Lake was two for 15 in the quarter (two for 20 includ- ing the latter part of the third) when Kavanagh nailed a three, was fouled, and converted the four-point play for a 49-47 Vi- king lead with 1:01 left.   Lake stopped Jackson on its next possession but was unable to run out the clock.  Jackson took its final possession with 20 seconds left and tied the score at 49-49 on Kyle Bigovich’s lay- in with 12 seconds remaining. A rushed Kavanagh shot at the buzzer wasn’t close.  Over- time Lake looked dead when Jackson scored eight straight points until DeShawn’s lay-in cut the gap to 57-51 with 1:13 left.  McFerrin was fouled on the play, missed the free throw but Myers stole the rebound underneath and converted the basket to make it 57-53. Kavanagh’s driving lay-in at 22 seconds and McFerrin’s re- bound putback at 18 seconds brought Lake to within 59-57.  MIKE ANDERTON , OCR Text: February 14, 2018 Edition 3 Issue 15 PO Box 349 Lake Stevens, WA 98258 LakeStevensLedger.com CAV ROBOTICS Lake Stevens students hosted and competed in a robotics competition at Cavelero Mid High School.
