Unfortunately, the retention of local historical records in Pacific :Grove has been somewhat haphazard - something the Heritage Society is now trying to remedy. As a result, my research has turned up some conflicting information about the Japanese Tea House. Nevertheless, I was able to piece together some facts about it. From 'the material I found, I would date the construc- tion of the Tea House (and Garden) at about 1904. I realize this conflicts with your 1897 postcard date, so I would appreciate having a copy of it, in the interest of setting the record straight. I arrived at this date based on the belief that William F. Smith was the developer of the Tea House, and that the property on which the Tea House was built did not come into his possession until after 1900. Photos indicate that the Japanese Tea House was one of the first "improvements" made by Smith during the time he held the land at Lover's Point, It was one of the only buildings already in place when the Sanborn Map dated 1905 was drawn.
