The Lake Stevens High School FCCLA had 10 stu- dents who have qualified to at- tend the National Leadership Conference at San Diego on FCCLA students attend National Leadership Conference July 1 - 8 by earning first place in their STAR Event competi- tion category. Megan Holman -  Chapter Service Display - Big Viking, Little Viking - she also scored a perfect 100 from all the judges! Carlos Rojo and Lauren Lindbloom - Chapter in Re- view Display  - 1st place Brittney Knauts and Hannah Parke - Promote and Publicize FCCLA! -  1st place Raquel Leenstra and Shelby Lamont - Chapter in Review Portfolio -   1st place Jacob Anderson - Leadership  -  1st place Samantha Cote - Job Inter- view -  she also scored a perfect 100 from all the judges! The club also had two state officers helping to preside at the meeting this year  - Es- tephanie Guzman and Jacob Anderson. Katie Ellis also won a $1,000 scholarship. All 13 students received Five Power of Ones 2016-2017 State Officers in- clude Samantha Cote - State VP of Region 5 and Jacob An- derson- Washington State FC- CLA President. Dozens of local businesses set-up booths inside the Lake Stevens High School Com- mons on Saturday, April 23, to show off their goods and ser- vices to the Lake Stevens Com- munity. The Greater Lake Stevens Chamber of Commerce hosted the event to help their mem- bers showcase their business and to let locals know all of the unique and necessary busi- nesses the Lake Stevens com- munity has to offer them. Republic Services’ Bobby Brown feels like the Expo helped their customers realize all of the possibilities when it comes to recycling. “We’re here to make people aware of how and what to re- cycle,” Brown said. “Today you can recycle 80 percent of what you throw away. Most people don’t realize that.” The Lake Stevens Food Bank, along with other local non- profits, set-up booths to help bring awareness to their com- munity projects. Chamber’s Think Local Expo helps community support business The Food Bank is trying to raise money for a new facility which will help them be able to help more people. They were selling $5 raffle tickets for the opportunity to win a Russell Wilson autographed football. Lake Stevens Chamber Pres- ident Doug Warren explains the importance of supporting local business, especially in a community like ours. “The community needs to know about business in their community. We are a bedroom community, which means that most of us leave town to go to work each day,” Warren said. “By thinking local and shop- ping local we put more money back into our community.” Warren also highlights the importance of supporting lo- cal businesses who hire local employees and all that they contributed to our communi- ty through donations to local events. “We have so many business- es that put money back into Lake Stevens. Businesses like Ace Hardware for example, After more than six months of having Grade Road closed between 30th Avenue NE and 32nd Avenue NE, the city has been able to start repairing the sliding slope of the embank- ment which was found in Oc- tober 2015 when the city hired Grade Road repairs moving forward pam stevens a geotechnical firm to monitor the ground there. “In 2014 the City hired a geotechnical firm that has been performing the moni- toring services for the City.
