New temporary meeting place
October’s meeting will be held in the Mason County Historical Society Museum located at 5th
and
Railroad Ave in Shelton. The board decided we might very well need an alternative location in case Don
and Lorraine were out of town and access to our usual meeting place was unavailable. I started looking for
an alternative meeting place and calling organizations with a facility that met our needs. After a dozen calls,
the clear choice was the Mason County Historical Society Museum. Director Kristin Fabry, kindly offered
us the use of their facilities for our October meeting. Thanks Kristin. The start time will remain at 7:00
p.m. The museum has Wi-Fi and I’ll have the password so we can access it for our needs. When viewed
from a genealogical perspective this is a good fit for us.
The agenda includes a brief overview of the museum’s collection, examination of family and vital records
in their holdings, then a round table discussion and brainstorming ideas about how Mason County
Genealogical Society can contribute to making these records more readily available to researchers. This
could be an expansion of our cemetery and obituary project we are currently engaged in.
Upcoming events
Influenza Program
How many of us think that today’s political climate couldn’t possibly get any worse? If you believe that,
you’ll want to attend the Mason County Historical Society’s October presentation to mark the start of the
Great Influenza Epidemic. Here are some tidbits to consider. Do you know the name of the first person
who died from influenza in Mason County? The date and year? What were the Loyal Legion of Loggers
and Lumbermen, Industrial Workers of the World, American Protective League, and Slackers?
The answers to these questions and more will be revealed on Sunday October 22, 2017 during my
presentation about Influenza in Mason County. Mason County Historical Society Museum’s doors open
at 1:30 p.m. and the presentation starts shortly after 2:00 p.m. Hope to see you there.
