Murray-HomeTo Open By JEANNETrE REGAN The home of Mr. and Mrs. Duncan Murray, constructed in 1908 by a past mayor of Pa- cific Grove, will be opened to j the · public as part. of the Vic- torian Homes Tour on March ¤15. 'Located at 429 Ocean View Blvd. It was built by Mrs. Mur- ray's parents, the John P. Pryors, The Pryors came to Pacific Grove from Texas aftet he was named general manager of the Pacific Improvement Co., now Del Monte Properties Co. Mr. Pryor served as Inayor of Pacific Grove from 1914- 1917.and again in the late 1920s. In 1939 Mr. and Mrs. Mur- ray moved into the home. Post-Victorian in design, everything in rthe house was , made to order. Edgework on .the walls was crafted by hand and then hand waxed. Brass and copper door knobs, hinges, and light fixtures were hand fashioned by Lillian Palmer. Each brick for the fir*place was personally picked by Mrs. Pryor. Mrs. Murray recalls her mother planning the home with convenience in mind. Two stairways were -built into the three story building. The back stairs were for the use of the Pryors' five children and the maid, Ithus eliminating excuses for walking through the parlor and disturbing guests. Speaking tubes were in- stalled, enabling the family to communicate between rooms. Mrs. Murray recalled the first reception held in the home. It was in 1908 and the Great White Fleet had sailed into Monterey Bay. An 0Ider brother was an ensign in the navy and aboard one of the ships.
