Subject: Findings re request to demolish carriage house
adjacent to Beacon House, 468 Pine Avenue
Dear Ms. Nichols:
This letter is intended to summarize the findings of the
Community Development Director made pursuant to Section 2(b) of
the City's Interim Ordinance Imposing a Moratorium on Demolition
of Buildings Constructed Prior to 1925.
On October 10, 1985, a meeting to review the proposed demolition
was held with Adam Weiland (Heritage Society), David Stocker
(Heritage Society), and Associate Planner Judith MacClelland in
attendance. Prior to this meeting, Chief Building Inspector Dale
Foley and I reviewed the structure at the site.
It was noted by the Committee that the structure appears to have
been built in conjunction with the dwelling at 468 Pine. It is
architecturally closely related to the dwelling in style. scale,
and materials and is considered an integral part of the design
elements characterizing Beacon House. In addition, it was noted
that the structure appears to be unusually sound for a building
of this age.
Thus, it is my determination that the subject structure does not
meet the conditions to grant an exception from the interim
ordinance and allow demolition.
It was suggested at the meeting that the property owner may want
to consider incorporating the carriage house into the design of a
proposed project (single-family dwelling or duplex) for the site.
