Attached is a letter written by Silas W. Mack of Monterey on April 20,1906.
IVe also attached a mayoral proclamation from the day of the earthquake. Both items are from the Gilder Lehrman Collection.

Silas W Mack- was bom in Canada on 12 Aug 1866 and died on 27 Nov 1946.
-According to a 1930 Census he was then married to Daisy M. Mack and was still living in Monterey.
- He is mentioned in 23 articles in Oakland Tribune from 1907 - 1934.
- He was a U. S. Commissioner and the paper mentions several trials he presided over including many
prohibition and opium drug offenses.
- In 1923 he was named director of the Bank of Carmel (Salinas, CA).
- In 1925, he co-founded the Monterey County Title and Abstract Company.
- Also according to society pages he was very involved in community events such as charity bar'quets and
Sunday School events.
Founded in 1994, the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History promotes the study and love of
American history. Increasingly national and international in scope, the hstitute targets audiences ranging
from students to scholars to the general public. It creates history-centered schools and academic research
centers, organizes seminars and enrichment programs for educators, partners with school districts to
implement Teaching American History grants, produces print and electronic publications and traveling
exhibitions, and sponsors lectures by eminent historians. The Institute also funds awards including the
Lincoln, Frederick Douglass and George Washington Book Prizes and offers fellowships for scholars to
work in history archives, including the Gilder Lehrman Collection.
