Hit-and-run auto
kills Matt Saeger
The Washington State Patrol
is looking for information from the
public about the hit-and-run
death of a Shelton man.
Matthew G. Saeger, 33, died
early Sunday morning of massive
injuries suffered to his body and
head when he was struck by a
vehicle while walking along Clo-
quallum Road about two miles
west of Shelton. His legs were
broken, troopers said.
Saeger's body was found in the
middle of the road a little after 3
am. on Sunday by a passing
motorist. Troopers believe the
fatality must have happened
shortly before the body was found
because that stretch of Cloqual—
lum is relatively well-traveled.
WSP DETECTIVE Dwight
Combs has been assigned to
reconstruct events leading up to
the fatality. He said witnesses
reported that earlier in the eve-
ning Saeger had been drinking at
the Mill Creek Inn. Shortly after
11 pm. on Saturday he left the
Mill Creek on foot after first give
ing the keys to his car to a wait-
ress at the bar. Witnesses told
troopers that he appeared to be
too intoxicated to drive.
Combs said troopers don’t
know for sure what happened
between 11 pm. on Saturday
and 3 am. on Sunday. They are
investigating unconfirmed reports
that he stopped at another place
before starting on the long walk
home. Troopers haven’t ruled out
the possibility that Saeger was
hit on purpose.
“THAT IS SOMETHING we
are still trying to pursue right
now. It is still an open book,”
Combs said.
As of Wednesday afternoon,
troopers had no description of the
driver and no description of the
vehicle, “We do know that he was
struck by a vehicle and we’re try-
ing to have the local people come
up with any information that will
assist in the location of this vehi-
cle," Combs said.
Persons with information
about the fatality Lre asked to
call Combs by dialing 911 or by
calling the Bremerton station of
the WSP at 13604784646
Earlier this week family mem—
bers started gathering for memo-
rial services to be held at noon on
Friday at the Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-day Saints in
Shelton, Two of Saeger’s sisters,
Bev Weddle of Methow and
Donda Waggoner of Sunnyside,
have been fielding condolence
calls from their brother's friends
in the Shelton area,
“WE WERE JUST absolutely
shocked to find out how be
affected so many people in the
community," Weddle said.
“He was very well respected
and well thought of in this com-
munity,” Waggoner said. “I hate
the fact that we had to learn that
in this way but it’s obvious that
he was.”
Saeger was a builder employed
as a framing foreman by Fredson
Homes, Incorporated. He grew up
in Mason County and attended
Shelton High School. .
