During the late '1_9th century, several thousand teen—
age brides moved with their husbands onto homesteads
along the North Oregon coast. Lost Pioneer portrays the
experiences of these women. , A .
Blending biographical data with historical imagina—
tion, Mark Beach, Ph.D;', historian, developed the char—
acter of Frannie by studying. the lives of three women
who. hoinesteaded in Tillamook Countyin the 18903:
Olive Scovell, Mary Gerritse and Jennie Reeher. Mrs.
ScOvell lived almost 60 years on her homestead prop-
erty. Today her many grandchildren in north Tillamook
County remember her fondly. Extensive written records
portray the lives of Mrs. Gerritse and Mrs. Recher.
With the biographies as a base, scenes were added
about events women might have eicperienced throughout .
their man lifetimeson the North Oregon 'coast. Lost
Pianeer takes place on Christmas Eve, 1941, just three
weeks after Pearl Harbor. Thelmain character, Frannie,
nowp66 years old, recalls her life during the early years
of the 20th century. '
