Tommy Stillwell
Lifetime Pacific Grove resident Thomas
Richard Stillwell died Saturday, Sept. 17, in a
Santa Rosa hospital from injuries sustained in a
Sept. 11 snorkling accident. He was 28.
Tommy's family say he was on vacation in
Anchor Bay (Mendocino County) and went out
with friends to practice free diving for abalone
with snorkel and mask. An excellent swimmer,
he was snorkeling in an area he had visited
several times a year for the past few years, when
he became tangled in kelp just below the surface
of the water.
His companions on the excursion, Guy Pruitt
and Chris Smith, both Monterey firefighters,
helped Tommy into the boat. There a third
member of the party, Commander Tom Maudlin,
PG police; joined Pruitt and Smith in ad-
ministering cardio-pulmonary resuscitation.
A physician and a fire department rescue
squad worked with the trio for an hour to revive
Tommy. By the time a helicopter from the
Sonoma County Sheriffs Department arrived,
his breathing was restored. The helicopter flew
Tommy to Healdsburg General Hospital on Sept.
11 and he stayed there until Thursday, Sept. 15
when he was taken to Community Hospital of
Santa Rosa and placed on a respirator.
· Tommy was born in Monterey Sept. 1, 1955
and lived all of his life in Pacific Grove. He was a
graduate of PG High, where he enjoyed track and
field and cross-country running. Eight years ago,
he took a job with a PG lumber firm. Five years
ago joined the PG Fire Department as a
volunteer and in 1980 was PG's Firefighter of the
Year.
He participated in many civic events through
the fire department, including Donna Griggs
Days, the Bluegrass Festival, children's bike
races and Good Old Days. He also started a
weight room project for the fire department.
Tommy is survived by his parents, Richard and
Beverly Stillwell, and two sisters, Sheri
Hauswirth and Suzy Derowski, all of Pacific
Grove; his maternal grandparents, Rusty and
Frances Stanfield of San Diego; his paternal
grandparents, Bob and Esther Robson of Bixby
Canyon; and his longtime sweetheart, Cynthia
Pena of Pacific Grove.
Memorial services were conducted Friday,
Sept. 23, in the First United Methodist Church,
PG. The Rev. Wayne Adams officiated at the 7
p.m. ceremony. Cremation has taken place.
The family requests memorial contributions to
the fire department weight room.
