While working on 529 Ocean View, Emily also designed two houses in San Jose, one for Lillian's parents and another for the Reverend George Foote, a minister at Emily's church. A 1906 San Jose Mercury article, "Women as Architects with Special Mention of Emily Williams"- probably written by Lillian-discussed the Palmer and Foote houses and provided a wonderful advertisement for Emily's skills (see page 22). Early that year, Emily designed and oversaw the building of a two-story, shingled vacation home at 119 Grand for W.S. Richards. Richards was presidentofSecurityStateBankinSanJoseandlivedonthesameblock as the Williams family. Moreover, W.S. Richards probably knew Emily through her father Edward and her brother Paul, both involved in banking in San Jose. Chivers Brothers built the "handsome, $4,000 home" for Richards and his family.
