While working on 529 Ocean View, Emily also designed two houses in
San Jose, one for Lillian's parents and another for the Reverend George
Foote, a minister at Emily's church. A 1906 San Jose Mercury article,
"Women as Architects with Special Mention of Emily Williams"-
probably written by Lillian-discussed the Palmer and Foote houses and
provided a wonderful advertisement for Emily's skills (see page 22).
When in San Jose, Emily and Lillian lived with the Donald Palmers at the

was in the business of furnishing light fixtures. Emily and Lillian
occasionally joined other visitors to the Monterey area in trips to Point
Lobos and the Carmel Mission In the spring of 1906, the Pacific Grove
newspaper reported that Emily was supervising the construction of a
cottage in Carmel near the sea, but no additional information has yet been
located about this project.
Following the success of Sequoia Lodge and the SanJose Mercury
article, Emily had her busiest year on the Monterey Peninsula in 1907.
Early that year, Emily designed and oversaw the building of a two-story,
shingled vacation home at 119 Grand for W.S. Richards. Richards was

as the Williams family. Moreover, W.S. Richards probably knew Emily
through her father Edward and her brother Paul, both involved in banking
in San Jose. Chivers Brothers built the "handsome, $4,000 home" for
Richards and his family. With the exception of a few additions to its
second story, 119 Grand looks much as it did when first completed.
