Helen Jane
Timm
Ex 52/7- I7
elen was born,
2/8/30, in Monroe, Sno-
homish County, WA, to
Carl & Mildred Chaffee,
both also born in Sno-
homish County. Her first
home was where her pa-
ternal grandfather had
homesteaded in the Sul-
tan Basin. During the
war, the Chafi'ees moved
to Belfair, where her fa-
ther went to work in the
shipyard. She attended
grade school there and
then South Kitsap H.S.
She married Bill
Timm, June 17, 1950,
after knowing him just
a few months, but it was
“love at first sight”, she
said. After Bill’s log-
ging jobs took them to
Quinault, Bremerton,
Belfair, and Snohomish
Countv. they moved to
Union in 1955 and into
the home they built in
1960 where she lived
until her death, 5/17/17.
Her first job was as a
13 year old, working for
Mary Theler in Belfair.
She candled eggs and
cleaned house among
other duties. From
Mary, she learned to ap-
preciate the value of be-
ing well dressed. Helen
loved to visit. From her
father, she got the abil-
ity to tell a story, from
her mother, the demean-
or of a lady.
She worked in the
Union Post Office in the
1950s. She was also a
girl scout leader in those
days. In the 60s, 703,
and 805 she worked for
Harold Dalke & Associ-
ates, AIA. As National
President of the ASA
(Architectural Secretar-
ies Assn.), she travelled
all over the country.
After Harold Dalke
retired, she did payroll
at the WA Corrections
Center until, in spite
of the friends she made
there, the boredom of
that particular state job
overcame her.
After retiring, she
and Bill continued
their travelling, driving
the Alcan Highway to
Alaska’s Arctic Circle,
to Russia, Europe (once
taking two granddaugh-
ters), Australia, New
Zealand, even Antarc-
tica, twice taking their
children and grandchil-
dren to Hawaii, the sec-
ond time including great
grandchildren.
She served for ten
years on the_Board of
the five county Timber-
land Regional Library
system. During her
tenure of Presidency on
. that board, the Belfair
library, after being cut
in three pieces, went by
barge on Hood Canal to
become the Hoodsport
Library. Belfair then got
a big new library. The
city of Shelton’s library
merged with the Timber-
land library, which was
in a little building on
Hwy 101, to become the
new library in Shelton in
the former Irene S. Reed
H.S. building, now called
the Mark Reed Library
Building, all during her
tenure as President.
Helen was an avid
reader. “There’s some-
thing in my library to
ofi'end everyone” was a
sweatshirt she had. She
was an accomplished
seamstress, sewing for
herself, her daughter,
mother, sister, best
friend, Donna Morris,
friends of her children,
her grandchildren, not
for a living but for the
love of it. She knit using
patterns for advanced
experienced knit-
ters. She hunted and
gathered mushrooms,
canned, pickled, pre-
served all produce that
the pioneers did, have
access to the garden
abundance of her folks’
place in Snohomish in
the Pilchuck River Val-
ley. Her cooking was par
excellence. Helen au-
thored her own cookbook
and edited two others
for St. David’s Episcopal
Church.
She and Bill back-
packed and camped with
their kids and alter the
kids were grown contin-
ued hiking with friends.
She deserved to wear
the sweatshirt, “I hiked
Mildred Lakes.” They
enjoyed razor clamming,
shrimping in their boat,
eating oysters, and big
groups of family and
friends to feed and share
in their bounty.
She was a longtime
member and volunteer
at St. David’s Episcopal
Church in Shelton and
in the last 15 years, also .
a member at the New
Community Church of
Union.
Helen was prede-
ceased by their month
old daughter, Terri
Jane Timm, and by her
parents, and her sister,
Betty Joan Olson. She
is survived by her hus-
band of almost 67 years,
Bill, age 90, and their
two children, Dianna
Timm Dryden and Wil-
liam J. Timm (Vicki),
their grandchildren,
Shiane Saeger (Jerry),
Shawn Wilder (Chris),
Chad Timm (Amy), and
Lauren Adams (Louis
Skinner); her great
grandchildren, Bailey
Wilder, Chloe Wilder,
Tessa Dragoo, Joanna
Timm, twins Owen &
Aiden Wilder, and Tra-
vis Saeger. She will also
be missed by numerous
nieces and nephews,
cousins, extended fam-
ily, friends of her chil-
dren, in laws, caregivers.
Her service will be
at St. David’s Episcopal
Church, in Shelton, co-
ordinated with the New
Community Church of
Union, at 11 a.m., Satur-
day, June 10th.
