Pacific Grove began as a tent city for
participants in the summer retreats put on
by the Methodist Church. Gradually, the
canvas shelters were replaced by board-
and-batten summer cabins and more sub-
stantial year 'round homes followed. A
group of residents not long ago decided to
identify the oldest survivor of those first
summer collages, and their diligent re-
search was crowned with success. Week-
end artist Irene Lagorio has pictured the
oldest house, and it was the first built, for
today's cover. Her "model" was an old
stereeptican slide, which clinched the con-
clusions of the researchers. There's more
about the old house on Pacific Street in the
report beginning on page 3.
