RE: 703 Congress
Dear Vicki & Mike,
It appears that your house at 703 Congress had its beginnings as a garage for 701 Congress. In July of
1924, Henry Gilfert a carpenter and the owner of 701 Congress (lot 1), took out a building permit to build
a garage with a sleeping room above at the rear of lot 2. This structure is on the enclosed 1926 Sanborn
insurance map. When the assessor passed by in March of 1925, he increased the assessment by $150 for
the garage/sleeping room. Please see the enclosed tax assessor information through 1926. I am also
enclosing two newspaper articles referencing the Gilferts.
In July of 1948, the structure was remodeled by Henry Shaw into a 4 room house with 1 1/2 baths. A
garage was added in 1949. Another addition was done in 1971 by Mr. & Mrs. Ron Miller. Our records
generally cover the period from 1874 through 1926. I found the building permits after 1926 in the files of
the Community Development Department at 16th & Laurel in Pacific Grove.
We are a non-profit organization and contributions are tax deductible. A family membership is $10 per
year and includes our newsletter called the Board and Batten. Please visit our Barn/museum at the corner
of 17th & Laurel in Pacific Grove on Saturday afternoons between 1:00 and 4:00 andpick up some of our
back issues.
