"For as long as I can recall, I have wondered why the Monte Cristo mines failed, sending the town to its final doom. The blame has been placed on the failure of the Everett and Monte Cristo Railway and its successors as well as the murderous weather and declining ore deposits. These certainly were factors, but not the only ones." - Daryl Jacobson,1
The Decline and Demise of Monte Cristo
The Syndicate Mines
Foreword
For as long as I can recall, I have wondered why the Monte Cristo
mines failed, sending the town to its final doom. The blame has been
placed on the failure of the Everett and Monte Cristo Railway and its
successors as well as the murderous weather and declining ore deposits.
These certainly were factors, but not the only ones.
Once history is lost, it cannot be revived. For that reason, I am
putting my thoughts, based mainly on unpublished data and personal
observations in and around the mines of Monte Cristo, into a document for
others to continue to pursue from.
A great deal of this information is unpublished data from the Forrest
Johanson collection. Back in the early to mid-1980s, I told Forrest, I was
researching information for a book a group of fellow history buffs and I
were planning to write about the mines of Snohomish County and another
one about the Everett and Monte Cristo Railway. Forrest suggested I use
some of his research data in the books, but also requested we not use his
name. So I copied several thousand pages of his documents, and have used
them freely since in PowerPoint presentations and research.
It was not until the 1999 MCPA winter social that Forrest told me
that he did want his name mentioned. Well, it’s too late to put his name in
the credit for the books, but not too late to honor him here and possibly
future documents. So here’s to you Forrest Johanson.
