First of 15 pre-1890 homes honored this week with Historic House markers
bestowed by the Pacific Grove Heritage Society was this structure at 225
Central Ave. Now owned by Mr. and Mrs. Kent Cherry, it was erected as a
summer home by state Sen. Benjamin J. Langford in 1884, when entry to the
Methodist retreat was through a locked gate. Langford was long remembered
as the man who, exasperated by red tape involved in obtaining and returning
the key, applied a sharp ax to the gate one night. It never was rebuilt. From left
above are Mrs. Cherry; Mrs. Anthony Saracas, another recipient; Mrs. Wil-
liam Butner, chairman of the society's marker committee, and David Mills, '
society president. Eligible for the redwood markers are owners of 182 homes
built before 1890.
