In January, Pacific Grove's old-
est historical landmark, "The
Captain's I louse," at 129 Pacific,
corner of Caledonia, will be
placed on the market. Reason for
this? The undersigned owner will
be filming TV docunientaries in
Alaska and in other lands for
several years.
The Captain's House is more·
than just a house.
Built by a sea captain an esti-
mated 126 years ago (long before
the town was founded in 1875. so
estimate has been based on met]1-
ods of construction and on mater-
ials used, such as handmade
square Hails such as were used
around Monterey iii 1845) this
charming example of a time long
gone has been used in Pacific
Grove promotional material for
tourists: it has been painted by
more artists than any other land-
mark on the entire Peninsula: and
as a result of several tliousands
viewing the The Captain's I Iouse
during two of Pacific Grove's
"Victorian Tours," tourists now
·ome year around to take pictures
and to ask if thy may "go
througli."
I IAUNTED
Thought to be haunted ill the
1880s, the house stood unoccupied
for one period of several years.
But not oilly have any ghosts long
since been laid. but in the past
decade another legend about The
Captain's IIouse being a "house of
good fortune" has gathered mo-
mentum.
The value of the house with its
original carriage house and the
land is currently being carefully
evaluated hy bank appraisers. so
the price shall not be Out of Ihic.
Hopefully. financing will be avail-
able to facilitate the wishes of the
right purchaser.
Because The Captain's liouse
IS more titan just a house. more
than just a family property. i)tlt
rather a Pacific Grove landmark
deserving is own historical mark-
er, I cannot in good conscience
leave it empty to deteriorate dur-
ing the years I shall be gone. Fur-
her. even the nicest tenants do
not take pride iii the upkeep of
property, as owners do,
So? It seems only fair to sell.
Anyone wishing to inspect the
house, or receive more specific in-
formation. is invited to contact
Leland Crowley of Crowley.Real-
·tors on . (He sold this
house to my family m 1958 ancl
shares the respect for this period
piece. )
Respect? The Captain's 1 [ouse
is much LOVED. This Announce-
ment of Intent has been written
with the hope that whoever the
.new, owner turns Out to he will
love this house and this town as
much as I cio.
