BUT ONCE IT DID IN PACIFIC GROVE :
Delaware hasn't got anything on
Pacific Gove when it comes to
"blue laws"-no sir, not one thing!
When that tiny eastern state had
a "clampdown" one recent Sunday
and jailed many a newsboy and
cigar stand salesmati and even a
radio-orator minister for laboring
on the Sabbath, it was to laugh.
For the Grove, U you ignore
the stern traditions of Increase
and Cotton Mather's seventeenth
century New England, fs some-
thing of a "grandpappy" when it
comes to bigger and better "blue
laws."
And, we might add, the Grove

And now that the city has fig-
uratively burned its old ordinance
books, and codified the remainder
in a manner that has become a
model for small cities throughout
California, is a good time to recall
just what was and wasn't done
back in the horsecar and gaslight
era.
With the important cauUon that
this is all past history now, and
that these "joker" laws have now
been repealed, here are a few of
the things that were illegal in the
Grove:
To drive an automobile at
more than 10 miles.an hour, to
dance the tango, to wear men's
slacks if you are a woman„ to
ride a horse more than six miles
an hour, to 'stay out after eight
in the evening if you are under

nance adopted as late as July' 21, t
1932-and repealed less - than" a
year later, incidentally-had to be C
of "opaque material," full ctit and
with "skirt of ample size. . . ."
And a city dance hall ordinance
