New meeting place
Thanks to MCGS President Sue Sheldon and her large network of resources, we have a new monthly
meeting location at the Veterans Memorial Hall at 210 W Franklin Street. The date and time (first
Thursday of the month at 7:00 p.m.) remain the same.
A new venue with additional space was needed for several reasons. We are growing, and it was difficult to
organize the museum space for our meetings. Our speakers were crammed into a small space with a
troublesome arrangement for presentations. Come meeting night, we had to re-arrange chairs and move
displays to accommodate our group.
The idea of meeting at the museum had good intentions. We would have easy access to the museum’s
collections of records and other documents, so we could assist the museum staff with digitizing records.
Reality, however, has a way of turning good ideas into mush and headaches. We can still assist the
museum and minimize the chance of damaging museum treasures by moving our meeting place to the
Memorial Hall. Our dream location would be to have a genealogy room within the museum, but space
prohibits this.
Along with the move, Mason County Genealogical Society, learned it was time to join the Twenty- first
Century in terms of following rules and regulations. I know, it’s the oppressive nature of government that
stifles the free spirited genealogical pursuits by focusing on, “rules and regulations,” sometimes there is a
time and place for rules and regulations.
I was surprised, as anyone, to find out we had bylaws. What was more surprising was we were supposed to
abide by them. What are our bylaws and how do we apply them? I checked back issues of the Mason Log
looking for answers. While the newsletter contains information, there was nothing about our bylaws. An
obvious editorial oversight. Thanks to Roger’s organizational skills, he was able to find the 1993 bylaws.
The surprises kept on coming. In addition to our president and treasurer, we needed a vice-president, a
secretary, and a board of directors (BOD), in order to qualify for non-profit status, which would allow us
free use of the Memorial Hall for a meeting place.
There will be no newsletter in July and
August. Have a safe and fruitful Summer
in your genealogical research and may
you crash many brick walls.
