238 Spruce Avenue
Pacific Grove, Ca 93950
Subject: 238 Spruce Avenue
Dear Mr. Lambert and Ms. Gallagher:
I have received a request from Adam Weiland, the Research Director of the
Heritage Society of Pacific Grove, to add the house at 238 Spruce Avenue to the
City of Pacific Grove's Historic Resources Inventory. His letter contains
information indicating that the house was built prior to 1927. For your records,
copies of Mr. Weiland's letter, of building permit applications for the house and
garage, of a building classification and computation record dated March 24, 1928,
and of the Sanborn map page drawn in 1926, from the Community Development
Department files are enclosed with this letter.
I am also enclosing a copy of chapter 23.76 ("Historic Preservation") of the
Pacific Grove Municipal Code, which contains Pacific Grove's historic
preservation regulations. The Historic Resources Inventory is defined in section
23.76.020(e). Section 23.76.030(a) pertains to additions to the Historic Resources
Inventory. Based on the documents submitted, the property at 238 Spruce Avenue
warrants being added to the Historic Resources Inventory. A copy of the notice
will be posted on the site today and is included with this letter.
In reviewing the ordinance, among other items you will find provisions for
architectural review and for demolition review for structures on the Historic
Resources Inventory. Incentives contained in the ordinance include provisions for
granting historic preservation permits (section 23.76.050) and the use of the State
Historic Building Code.
At the close of the ten day notice period, the addition of this property to the
Historic Resources Inventory will formally be made unless compelling evidence is
provided that contradicts or disputes the information received to date.
