Stehekin plane crash

STEHEKIN — The sudden
deaths of two Stehekin resi-
dents Saturday has left a gaping
hole in the quilt that unites this
remote village at the head of
Lake Chelan.
Roberta Pitts, 67, was one of
the community’s stalwart leaders
and bedrock residents, according
to friends. William Stifter, 64, a
Spokane cardiologist and part-
time Stehekin resident, was also
a great supporter of die commu-
nity. Both were killed when they
were trapped in a Chelan Air-
ways floatplane that flipped in
Lake Chelan upon landing near

Five people were on their way to Stehekin’s one-room schoolhouse
for a festival when their floatplane crashed into Lake Chelan near
Stehekin Landing Saturday afternoon, killing two of them. One of
the fatalities was Roberta Pitts, 67, the longtime superintendent of
Stehekin schools. She and part—time resident William Stifter, 64, a
Spokane cardi Io ist, were trapped inside the plane and died.
