2 KERN COUNTY PLACE NAMES
BARNES SETTLEMENT : A small settlement located a short dis-
tance West of Old River was established by Thomas Barnes
in 1859 on his homestead. In 1874 a townsite called Can-
field was laid out in the same area by Charles Wellington
Canfield. The site today is the property of the Kern Coun-
ty Land Company.
BLACKWELLS CORNER : Located at the intersection of state
highways 46 and 33, ten miles west of Lost Hills, the gaso-
line and refreshment way station known as Blackwell's
Corner was established by George Blackwell in 1921. The
station lays claim to having " the world's largest parking
lot".
BEALVILLE: (SRL 741) A Southern Pacific Railroad depot
and telegraph station which was established in 1876. Named
for Edward F. Beale, owner of the adjacent El Tejon
Raneho, the site is located about a mile south of Caliente
on the Bealville Cutoff.
1 BoDFISH : A small community at the south end of Kern River
Valley (Hot Spring Valley) 40 miles east of Bakersfield,
named for George Homer Bodfish early mining pioneer
who came to the area in the 1860's. The place, originally
called Vaughn, became a stage stop with a tavern in 1864.
A post office was established here in 1892.
BORON : Originally a mining camp established in 1926 after the
the discovery here by the U. S. Borax and Chemical Cor-
poration of a new form of borax. The camp was called
Amargo after the local Santa Fe Railroad siding, which in
Spanish means " bitter water." With the establishment
of a post office the community's name was changed to
Boron, the chemical element in borax. Boron is the home
of the largest open pit borax mining operation in the world.
The town is located 29 miles east of Mojave on state high-
lizay 58.
