Clifford Smith's 45-year 'temporary' job

Qifford "Smitty" Smidl had been IOId there were job openings at
China Lake by a friend who was working here as a building contraClOr.
So, since the job markel in Los Angeles was slim, Smidl decided 10
corne 10 China Lake, earn a few paychecks and go back 10 L.A. Thai
was October 1948 and he's been here ever since.
"I never expected 10 Slay here," said Smidl who was recently pre-
sented widl a pin for 45 years of federal service.
Born in Houma, La, Smidl graduated from Jefferson High School
in L.A. and has attended CampIOn Junior College and the then-Desen
Division of Bakersfield CoUege. His federal service began widl a !wI>-
year tour in the Army Air Corps, whert he lOOk machinisl courses and
served in boIh Africa and Italy.
He said, when he first got here, the wind blew every Friday. "New
guys would come in on Friday, so they'd be ready 10 go 10 wort Mon-
day, " he remembered, "but (beeause of die wind) they didn'l Slay 'til
Monday:
Like a 101 of people who can'l really say why they've stayed on, he
said, "The place just grows on you."
Married in 1949, he said, "My wife didn'l like il here al all." BUI
afler awhile. he explained, when she'd )(0 10 L.A. 10 visil for a week-
end, she could only lake il for a day and have 10 corne back.

Smidl moved nexiro a job as a general helper in die paint shop. Then,
when he was supposed 10 go inro the machine shop. he got senl instead
10 the Iypewriter repair shop whiie he waited for another opening at the
machine shop.
"That was a pretty good job, !hough; he said. "I had the run of the
base...got 10 go 10 a lot ofdifferent offices and meet a lot of people:
When he did make it 10 the machine shop, he came in as a helper,
and was accepted inro the machinist apprentice program in 1953 at the
Naval Air Facilily (NAF) model shop, where he Slayed for most of his
career. Following apprentice training, he was. promoted 10 model
maker (machinery), dlen leading· man and evenmally foreman model
maker.
