That'swhat happened to the blue house at the corner of Lobos and I.ighthouse avenues in Pacific Grove. The house that will be part of that city's 31st annual Historic Home Tour on Sunday, Oct 8. A four-room house built in 1889 for Pacific Grove's first doctor, Ebeneezer Snell, it grew into a two-story house in the 1950s under the sensitive direction of Roy Ami and Helen Hamlin. Its present owners, Robert and Norma Dease, enlarged the house even more, maintaining its integrity so carefully that it received the Heritage Society of Pacific Grove's award for the best remodeled house in 1996. Now the interior design has progressed far enough that the Deases are ready to welcome tour participants. This is not the couple's first experience with a historic home. In Southern California, they lived in an old California randh house. After Bob retired in 1985 and their children were grown, they spent two years looking for a town where they wanted to live. lhey P.G. After the Deases bought their house, it took another two years for them to figure out exactly what they wanted to do with it First came complete rewiring and replumbing and a new heating system. Insulation was put into the walls. 'Ihen came the large addition, designed by Bob, and involving the creation of a new front entrance. The former owners had begun adding salvaged touches to the already old house, including wooden cornices and an old counter from a jewelry store. The Deases continued combing salvage yards and garage sales for treasures. As Bob built the new addilion and remodeled the old part of the house, he was careful to keep the same feeling throughout He found a dozen doors from an old San Francisco mansion that are all alike. Bob put two of the house's original four rooms together as a parlor and dining room, with a very Victorian transitional piece made from ornamental wooden pieces found at a garage sale and columns he designed and had made on a speciallathe.
