Mason County Genealogical Society P.O. Box 103 Shelton, WA 98584-0103 The Mason Log Volume 9 Issue 9 June 1, 2012 June meeting • Thursday, June 7th • 7:00 p.m. Start time • Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at 12th & Connection • Membership dues single: $15.00 Couple: $20.00 • Find us on the web at http://rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wamcgs/ The inside scoop • DNA news • 1940 Census information • Letter from the editor The latest on DNA Ancestry is cashing in on the DNA buzz from the “Who Do You Think You Are” and “Finding Your Roots” television shows. Subscribers to Ancestry can get their DNA tested for $99. From a genealogical point of view this seems like a bargain. For us that don’t have subscriptions to Ancestry and want to know about our genetic make up, the price for such testing range from a low of $79 to $68,000 and change. I’m thinking that you get what you pay for in these kinds of situations. $79 will get you bare bones information without much flesh and that might be just fine. The problem is there are a number of businesses offering this service, at this price and the jury is still out on the reliability of the information and the testing procedures. If you opt for cheap, I suggest that you research the available choices. The $68,000 choice is more useful in the medical field, which might not be the kind of information that you’d want to know at this time in your life. “Finding Your Roots” used “23 and Me” to do their testing. Us non-celebrities will have to fork over $299 for the same test from them. Overall, those who subscribe to Ancestry might have the best deal. Kathy Lester sent us our first article, it talks about the use of DNA testing to solve a mystery. The only problem was the answer wasn’t well received by some. The second article is for those of Irish descendent. , OCR Text: Mason County Genealogical Society P.O.
