Community College Inaugurates
Its Third President

College staff, faculty, administrators,
trustees, educators, and government, com!
munity, and business representatives
gathered to celebrate the inauguration of
Florida Community College at Jackson—
ville’s newest president, Dr. Charles Calvin
Spence Ill. The ceremony was held at the
Civic Auditorium on April 11.
The event, which drew several hundred
in attendance, was the third such ceremony
in the College’s 20—year history. Dr. Spence
succeeds Dr. Benjamin R. Wygal, who
served as College president for 14 years.
The College’s first leader was Dr. J. Bruce
Wilson, who was president when the Col—
lege first Opened its doors in 1966.
Dr. Spence was appointed president by
College trustees on June 10, 1985 and
assumed his duties on July 8, 1985. He
came to Florida Community College from
Clinton Community College, Clinton,
Iowa, where he served as president for five
years. He was selected by the College’s
board from among 100 national candidates
screened by our Presidential Search Com!
mittee and was the trustee’s unanimous
choice for the job.
Dr. Spence has the challenge of leading
the College into its third decade of ex—
cellence and the inauguration served not
only as an opportunity to officially
recognize him as president, but to celebrate
the College’s first 20 years of service to the
community.
The College honored Dr. Spence and his
family with a reception held on the mez—
zanine following the formal ceremony.
Adding to the festivity Of the occasion were
beautiful floral arrangements designed and
made by the students Of home economics
professor Juanita Smith.
Guests also had the opportunity to enjoy
a special display board in the lobby ex—
hibiting the many facets of the College, its
programs and student successes.
More than 100 college staff volunteered
to help the 17‘member inaugural planning
committee, composed Of staff, trustees, and
community representatives.
“One of the more heartwarming aspects
of chairing the committee was the number
of staff who volunteered their assistance,”
said Ann Tillinghast, director of public
affairs.
“We were hard pressed to produce enough
assignments for all of them, and their en—
thusiasm and willingness were an inspira—
tion,” she said. “We have much to be proud
Of at our institution in the people who
make up our staff and to all of them I
would like to extend a heartfelt ‘Thank
YOU!’
Asked what the highlight Of the evening
was for him, Dr. Spence replied, “During
the reception, hundreds of college
employees stated again how proud they
were to be a part of such a great college. I
can see that pride increasing every day and
being translated into positive efforts for
students. Thank goodness for our ability to
now focus on the positive."

Donald Zell Joins
Governing Board
DONALD ZELL

Jacksonville businessman Donald D. Zell as
a new member of the Florida Community
College at Jacksonville District Board of
Trustees. A pointed by Gov. Bob Graham,
Zell officially began his duties as a trustee
on June 1. He re laces eightyear board
veteran A. N y Lewis, president of Lewis
Food Brokerage Co.
Zell is an assistant vice—president with the
investment/securities firm of E. F. Hutton
and has been with the com any for 12
years. A native of Brunswic , Ga., Zell has
lived in Jacksonville for more than 30 years
and is active in numerous civic and com-
munity affairs.
Zell is immediate past resident of the
Florida Community Col ege at Jacksonville
Foundation, Inc., and continues to serve on
the foundation’s executive committee. He is
a member of the Tournament Players Club,
serving as 1979 TPC chairman and cur—
rently serves as captain of the past
chairmen’s board, the governing board of
the TPC. Zell is also a member of the
Gator Bowl Board. He serves as officer of a
number of firms including Z Gas Co,
Coastal Marine of St. Augustine, Hazards,
and Tullis Insurance Co.

Busy Trustee Devoted Much
Time And Energy To College

As senior member, in years of service, of
the eight—person governing body of Florida
Community College at Jacksonville, trustee
A. Noody Lewis devoted an enormous
amount of his personal time to college and
foundation affairs during his nearly eight
years of service to the Community College
This May marked the end of his second
four—year term as a trustee and his retire—
ment from the College’s board.
Lewis, president of Lewis Food Brokerage
Co, devoted an estimated 1,000 hours of
his time in uncompensated service to the
College, while also maintaining a busy
schedule in business affairs and social and
civic functions.
Lewis was honored with a special resolu—
tion recounting his many contributions to
the College, foundation and area citizenry
during the May 21 meeting of the college
governing board, his last as a trustee
As a board member, Lewis served as a
member of the facilities, finance, and per—
