Robert C. Strand, 68, a 20-year
Shelton resident, died Friday, July
1, 1994, in Bremerton.
He was born March 31, 1926, to
Carl and Rosella (Youngberg)
Strand, in Rawling, N.Di
Mr. Strand was a Bremerton
resident for 40 years before moving
to Shelton in 1976, He was a mem-
ber of the Disabled American Vet-
erans No. 5 in Bremenon and No.
22 in Gorst. He was past Com-
mander and current chaplain, and
helped promote and build the DAV
hall in Gorst, Mr. Strand also be-
longed to the VFW Not 239, Eagles
Not 192, and the National Order of
the Trench Rats No. 323, all in
Bremerton. In Shelton he belonged
to the American Legion No, 31 and
ms a lifetime member of Voiture
No, 135. He also belonged to the
Meat Cutter‘s Union.
For many years Mr. Strand also
ran Camp Oak Patch, a home for
mentally retarded men, on Lake
Oak Patch near Belfair. He served
in the Army during World War II
and in the Korean War as a para-
trooper with an Army airborne
unit.
In 1982, he volunteered to be-
come the Christmas basket and
child welfare chairman for Voiture
No, 135. In the ast 10 years, 4,812
baskets of food ve been handed
out. Those baskets feed 19,243 peo-
ple of which 10,667 were children,
Mn Strand enjoyed children in
1991 he initiated a new program in
conjunction with the Christmas
food baskets: a bicycle raffle with
proceeds to purchase tricycles to
be given out on food basket day. He
coined the name of this proyam
“Little Bikes for Little ’l‘ykes.” In
the past three years, 63 tricycles
have been handed out. He also ini-
tiated the Thanksgivmg Meals on;
Wheels” program in 19841 This pro-
gram involved the home delivery of
hot turkey dinners to shut-ins on
Thanksgiving mornings, During
the past 10 years, 418 meals have

In 1988 Mr. Strand obtained
Windy’s World. a balloon-toting
clown, involved with talking about
safety (fire, strangers, home and
drugs). He and Windy traveled to
live schools in the area and ut on
their program before 1,720 e ildren
from ages 6 to 16. Mr. Strand is
described by his family as a man
who travelled many miles and
5 nt many hours for the purpose
ofiielping the young and old in the
community,
In his spare time Mr. Strand
liked to fish, camp, bowl and golf,
and in his younger years he en-
joyed a good game of pool with his
friends and family.
Surviving Mr. Strand are his
mother, Rosella Strand, Breme»
non; three sons, Richard and his
wifeJoyce Strand, Poulsbo, Michael
R. Strand, Bremerwn, Larry
Strand, Port Orchard; two broth-
ers, Cliflord Ci Strand, Bremerton,
Carl Strand Jr, Springfield, 111.; a
sister, Grace Kelly, Bremerton;
also two granddaughters, numer-
ous nieces and nephews, and many
friends.
