Shelton banker and active com-
munity member Thomas J.
Spikes died Monday, July 5, at
his home in Shelton following an
extended illness. He was 52 and
lived in Shelton
since 1978.
He was born
May 28, 1952 in
Walla Walla to
Thomas and r
D eva (Clark)
Spikes.
He finished
high school in
Elgin, Oregon,
and was class
Valedictorian. He
also attended
Oregon State Thomas J.
University. Spikes

gan his more than 30-year career
in banking at the US Bank in its
work-study program to help pay
his way through Eastern Oregon
University where he graduated
with a bachelor’s degree in busi-
ness economics in 1975.
Following college, he worked in
banking in Northeastern Oregon
for two years. In 1978, he became
loan officer and branch manager
for Hood Canal State Bank. He
joined Heritage Bank in 1994 as
vice president and commercial
business banking oflicer.
He served in the US. Army
National Guard for six years.
He married Margaret Alice
Tavlor on December 21, 1974 in
Union, Oregon.
In 1983, he was named Citizen
of the Year by the Shelton-Mason
County Chamber of Commerce.
Mr. Spikes was a member of
Shelton Rotary for many years.
He served as president and was
awarded the International Paul
Harris Fellow award for his con-
tributions to the organization and
community. He was named ShelA
ton Rotarian ofthe Year for 2003.
2004.
He served on many boards and
positions. including the board of
the Economic Development Coun-
cil of Mason County where he
served as president and treasurer.
His interests included hunting
with his buddies, cooking for fam-
ily and friEnds, tellingjokes, fish-
ing, golfing and having fun with
his friends.
His family said they will re-
member him as a devoted hus-
band and father who always put
his children first.
His father preceded him in
death on July 2, 1995.
Surviving are wife Margaret
“Margie" Spikes of Shelton; ’
daughter Mindy Spikes of Olym-
pia; son Chris Spikes of Shelton;
mother Deva Spikes of Elgin, Or-
egon; brother Rod Spikes of Elgin,
Oregon; and sister Denise Morris
of Kenai, Alaska.
A memorial service is set for 2
pm, Saturday, July 10, at the First
Baptist Church in Shelton. Pastor
Greg Scandrett will officiate.
