Baker Historical Record Timber sales activity continued to increase during the past year. Ths timber cut from 4 Class C and D sales totaled 13 million board feet as compared to a cut of 1^ million board feet for 1946. Thera were 5 active sales of this type for a portion of the year. In addition, 30 Ranger and Supervisor vnad- vertised sales were made for a volume of 644 M board feet and a valuation of §2541.50. Small sales of this nauuro for 1946 was for a volume of 795 M board feet and a valuation of §2356.50. Salvage sale areas on which these small sales aro made are rapidly approaching a point of extinction as there has been considerable daaand for timber of a salvage nature in the past two year®. One Regional Forester sale for 12 MM board feet and one Supervisor sale for 3,500 I-I board feet was made during 1947. The latter sale received a top price of $31 per M for western r edeedar which is a record stumpage price for any species on the Forest to date. The Timber Management Plan was completed for tills working Circle during 1947 and a sustained annual cut of 22 B4 board feet was indicated. The tree planting program was initiated this year with planting taking place during the spring and fall. The precipitation again was heavy - a total of 130.03 inches was recorded. While this was less than last year’s total of 144.14 inches it was the second highest recorded in the State for 1947» It is estimated that 36,850 useaw of recreational resources visited the Mont® Cristo last year. This is an increase of 6,850 over the previous years total. During one 10 hour period on a Sunday in July, 884 cars passed by the Ranger Station* This was registered by a State Highway Department traffic counter. This influx of recreationists also brought on a nurfoer of "incidents”. One mountain climber foil 500 feet to his death on Wilmon Spire East; a hunter was lost on Deer Creek and no evidence of him has ever been found. Two other hunter® were lost over night as was one elderly lady. A search for a reported skeleton was also made which turned to be a stump and two weather beaten limbs. During the early spring it was learned that the timber on Section 16, State School Land lying direcly across the river from the Ranger Station was to b® sold. It was felt that any cutting on the north slope of Kt. Pilchuck should No reportable fires occurred this year. Some bad moments were had during slash burning however, ihe slash burning was held to the cutover areas. Tiie Citation for Safe Work Performance during 1946 was received this year. A lost time accident occurred in September. Up to this time a record of 1,147 days without a lost time accident was set.
