recting, painting, gluing, sew-
ing, you name it and the kids
involved in Ludus Youth The-
atre Group do it, and it’s been
that way since the group start-
ed in 2013.
Cheryl Ortiz and her son
Steven, who was a student at
Cavelero Mid High School at
the time, opened the group to
give kids who loved perform-
ing, like Steven, an opportu-
nity to do so close to home.
“Me and my mom started
the company with only five or
six kids that I had selected,”
Steven explained. “We were
planning on performing skits
together for friends.”
The group took off and soon
they found themselves raising
money so that they could per-
form Disney’s Jungle Book.
They became a 501(c)3, or
non-profit organization and
hosted car washes and other
fundraising events so that they
could afford to buy the scripts.

ets sales to do a production

Lake Stevens student created, directs and acts of Annie and after continu-
ous sold out performances,
they were soon on their way
to becoming one of the most
popular youth theatre groups
around.
The group is proud of their
ability to include everyone
who auditions in their per-
formances and still be able to
make enough money to cover
their costs and continue per-
forming even bigger and better
shows.
“Ludus Youth Theatre
Group has always cast every
young person who auditions
regardless of their abilities.
We believe there is a place for
everyone in a production and
we have found that in doing
this, it initiates acceptance and
respect in the entire cast. This
in turn increases the sense of
belonging and purpose within
the special needs child or a
child who would not have been
given the chance to be part of
a musical production in most
other theater organizations,”
their website says.

At approximately 5:30 p.m.
Sunday, July 19, a call was
placed to 911 to report that
‘someone was in the river and
he could not get them out.’
The Snohomish County
Sheriff’s Office and the King
County Police Department
responded to the area, along
with fire personnel, in ap-
proximately the 62000 block of
Index-Galena Road, which is
near to the Troublesome Creek
Campground.
Witnesses advised that they
were traveling as a group of
four adults (this is all of the
detail available at the time of
the call) when two men in the
group went swimming, which
was in the North Fork of the
Skykomish River.
Lake Stevens man drowns near
Index in Skykomish River
The area was beneath a wa-
terfall that was turbulent and
difficult to swim in. One
swimmer barely made it out
of the water and they observed
the other man go under and
then not surface again.
The operation shifted from
a rescue mission to a recovery
mission that same evening.
The missing man is in his
early 20’s from the Lake Ste-
vens area and had not been
identified when the Ledger
went to print Monday evening.
The Snohomish County
Sheriff’s Office Dive Team re-
sumed the recovery mission
Monday morning, due to the
technically complicated and
remote area and the need for
daylight to conduct the opera-
tion.
