FANNY OSBOURNE'S "ghost" appears over Randy
Reinstedt's shoulder as he reads about her antics at
the Robert Louis Stevenson House.
HE "LADY IN BLACK" who floats through the
Stevenson House, a "priest" who haunts the Royal Presidio
Chapel, a rider on a white horse charging through the Santa
Lucia mountains in the midnight hours are some of the
"Ghosts of Old Monterey.
"
A collection of these tales has been gathered and published
by Randall "Randy" A. Reinstedt of Carmel. Teaching Cali-
fornia history to fourth graders at the Patton school in the
Monterey district, Mr. Reinstedt began searching out some of
the intriguing tales that surround the romantic history of
Monterey's and the Peninsula's past.
"I've always been interested in Monterey history," he said,
"ever since I was a small boy, through school and Monterey
Peninsula College and when I was at San Jose State it was
California history. I liked touring the old adobes"' It wasn't
hard for a boy to imagine soldiers walking around the old
Presidio grounds, Indians gathering fish on the shoreline or
the Padres in their long brown robes directing the planting
and harvesting of crops. The relics of that past, fortunately,
are still all around, in some form or other.
An appreciation for the past, a talent for writing and the
eager response from his young charges - Mr. Reinstedt agrees
that fourth graders are just about the 'greatest' youngsters to
be teaching because of their enthusiasm and response - inevi-
tably led to the addition to literature Of the Monterey
Peninsula.

Frontier, True, and other magazines on the history of the

Mrs. Ercole (Isabella) Monti, son Mike Monti, Titti
Pedemonti, Mr. Ercole Monte (father of Mike) and

HERE WAS A GREAT REUNION at Isabella and
Ercole Monti's in Carmel recently, and there was great re-
joicing. Relatives from four continents met and celebrated.
There was the Montis, who own and operated Isabella's
Restaurant, their son Mike and his Thai bride Bonnie, Ercole
Monti's two nephews and niece from Genoa, Italy and the
Belgian Congo, and Mrs. Eva Henderson, Isabella's mother.
Mike Monti is back permanently from a series of duties
with the Air Force in Thailand (July 1966 to September '70)
where Mike met his "porcelain doll" at a Sunday 'Tea Dance'
in Udorn.
Mike tells that Bonnie worked at the Base Officer's Club
where he was stationed but later her occupation was that of
a gambler "all Oriental people love to gamble and my wife is
no exception." He continued with, "When we came to
Carmel, Bonnie taught my mother, father and grandmother
how to play 'Thai Poker' - a game that surpasses gin rummy -
we all play it when we want to kill time."
Now that Mike is back, he presently assigned as NCOIC of
the Administrative Section for the Air Force Liaison Detach-
ment, as the Presidio in Monterey and attending MPC at
night taking classes in Hotel-Restaurant Management. Bonnie
is working at Isabella's.
"The best part of our story is that we are expecting a
'little blessing' soon, Mike related happily.

climber, came to the USA for the second time - on this trip
he traveled with his niece and nephew Ettore and Titti
