Dear Fran:
This is in response to your May 24, 2012 Plague Request for your home located at 402
1411 St., in Pacific Grove. The subject request was researched by the Pacific Grove
Heritage Society' s Research Team. A recommendation was subsequently submitted to
the Heritage Society's Board ofDirectors and was approved.
Tax and assessor records indicate that the original owner of record was Merle F. Harper
and that the original construction date was 1926. A footprint of the house appears on the
1926 Sanborn Map, which indicates it was built that year. The construction date was
further corroborated by a 1928 Building and Classification and Computation Record
Report.
It was determined, through researching records at City Hall, that there were a number of
substantive changes to the exterior of the house recently and since 1926. However, it was
felt by the Board that the alterations to the house were positive in nature and as you stated
in your e-mail, the changes had added to the "old fashioned look".
You will be contacted by the Heritage Society when the plague is completed. You can
pick the plague up at the Heritage Society Barn located at 605 Laurel Ave., in Pacific
Grove. Completion ofthe plague can take three to six months depending on the backlog
of requests. As you know, there is a $35 donation fee required for replacement plaques.
However it is my understanding that the $35 was part of the closing costs when you
purchased the home. Please bring this letter when you pick up the plague or ask the
attendant at the Barn to check our file for 388 Central. This letter will be in the file.
Thank you for your interest in the Pacific Grove Heritage Society.
