RE: 859 Maple Street
Dear Ms. Wotan:
In response to your request for information on the above referenced property, I have
researched the County Assessor Tax Records and Maps, files at your CDD and A Field
Guide to American Houses, by Virginia & Lee McAlester (Alfred A Knopt Inc.), I also
have studied the characteristics ofthe home at this location.
The property is not defined on the 1926 and earlier Pacific Grove Sanborn Maps because
at that time, this property was outside ofthe City limits.
In the course of my research, it was determined that the original address for this location
was 857 Maple Street, which is reflected on The County Assessor Maps. Additionally,
this lot, located in Block 340 was changed from lot 5 to lot 1.
The 1928 Building Classification and Computation Record identifies 3 structures on the
property, a three room, board & batten, single-family dwelling, a shed (possibly a garage)
and a poultry house. Taxes for improvements to the property were first assessed in the tax
year 1925-1926.
Ofnote, the County Assessors Tax Records are recorded by fiscal year beginning July 10
and ending June 30th and reflect the party who paid the taxes. I am enclosing copies of
tax records from June 30, 1924 through June 30, 1932.
On July 5, 1930 building permit number 412 was issued to construct a 30,68, five room,
stucco, single-family dwelling and detached, 18x24 garage. It is my conclusion that this
dwelling replaced the 20x21 board & batten that was on this site in 1928.
