The Heritage Society of Pacific Grove P. O. Box 1007 Pacific Grove, CA 93950 Date: 4/30/2001 TO: Jane Sterling 622 Congress Ave Pacific Grove, CA 93950 RE: Address: 622 Congress Subdivision: 5th Addition to Retreat Block: 175 Lot: 9 Our maps and tax records show that the above structure was first assessed in: 1909 This means the structure was actually built early in that year, or late in the previous year. The first owner of this structure, according to the County's assessor's records was: Marv Ann Devilbliss Other Comments: Tax records spelled the name "Devilbiss", but City Directory spells it "Devilbliss", which I think is correct. I, and others, have been told that this house was moved here from where it served as a gate house for the Del Monte Forest, probably on Forest avenue. I guess it is possible that since the Pacific Improvement Co. owned both properties, that they could have moved it in late 1908 or early 1909 and sold it to George & Mary Devilbliss. However, as of 4/29/2001, I can find nothing in writing to indicate when or if it happened. Regardless, we will recognize the age of the house in this location as dating to 1909. Plaque Status: ® Structure is eligible for a plague and one will be made up for you at no charge. You will be notified when plague is ready. It could take 6 to 8 months. Structure is eligible for plague, but it must be requested by the owner. If you are the owner, please send a request to the above address or call The above phone number and leave a message. El Structure is not eligible for a plague at this time because: Enclosed please find: Tax assessor information through 1926. Sanborn maps from 1914 and 1926. City directory page from 1926.
