One week turn around time!
The annual Aquafest
Quadrathon was won this year
by a team of first-time com-
petitors who overcame a last
minute injury to claim the top
honors. The coed team lead by
Kevin St. John faced uncer-
tainty just a week before the
race when their teammate for
the 5K running event, 14 year
old Olivia Yetter, injured her
leg and could no longer com-
pete as a runner.
Refusing to give up on the
competition, young Yetter
asked to switch events with
her father who was the team’s
paddler. “I just wanted to be a
part of the team, I didn’t want
to give up” said Yetter, who had
never paddled a kayak before.
She began daily practice and
after a week of intensive train-
ing was ready Sunday morning.
She gave it everything she had

and brought the team home to
a first place overall win.
Team captain St. John said
the motivation to enter the
quadrathon came from Lake
Stevens Sunset Cove friends
and longtime quadrathon
participants who had won the
event for the last several years.
St. John remembers cheer-
ing them on each year, “I was
watching all my friends com-
pete, they were terrific, amaz-
ing athletes. And of course,
they gave me a tough time for
not taking part.”
But the real turning point
came last year at the Aquafest
pancake breakfast when one of
the group gave him a race shirt

peting.
“I felt so guilty and I just
couldn’t wear it. I knew then
and there that I wanted to
compete the next year.” said St. Aquafest Quadrathon winners Kevin St. John, OliviaYetter, Gabrielle Broberg and PaulYetter took first place their first year of competing
in the annual event.
