built at 312 Carmel Avenue in 1905. Mary was married to Joseph T. Elliott,
who worked for the T.A Work Company, a construction supply business,
located on the corner ofLighthouse and David Avenues. They lived in a
house built in 1898 by Ella Gay at 863 Lighthouse Avenue. IT. Elliott later
became the owner ofthe Golden Poppy Seed Restaurant on Alvarado Street
in Monterey.
Between the years of 1908 and 1912 the house at430 Laurel was
taken offthe tax roles and not reassessed until 1913. The county clerk's
office says that the most common reason for this occurrence would be that
the house burned down and was not rebuilt until 1913. There is, however, no
record of a fire at this location. There is also evidence in the April 29th,
1909 edition of the Pacific Grove Review that there was definitely a house at
this location during the time that it was not assessed.
So the evidence is strong that this is the original house built in the
summer 1895 and assessed in 1896 and not 1913. It does still remain a
mystery why the house was not assessed during this time period. When it
was reassessed in 1913, the house was put under the name ofElijah's much
younger second wife Esther S. Griggs, solely, and thus the name on the
plague issued by the Heritage Society. This was probably done for probate
or tax purposes.
On May 24, 1916, at the age of 85, Elijah Griggs died and Esther
continued to live in the house until 1918 when she moved to Los Angeles to
be close to her and Eli's only daughter, Lulu. The house was rented during
this time but Esther never sold it. In late October or early November 1933
Esther died and the house was put in the name of Lulu Griggs Raup, now
married to Henry Floyd Raup ofLos Angeles. She kept the house until 1938
when she sold it to Fred and Erma Baker.
I mentioned earlier that three out ofthe four Griggs' daughters, from
his first wife Emma, lived in Pacific Grove at the turn ofthe century. The
forth daughter, Nellie, settled in Medford, Massachusetts under her married
name ofNellie Mullan. She had a daughter named Eleanor who became
Eleanor Usher. She had a daughter named Carolyn Usher Moller who today
is a Psychologist from Napa, California. In the summer of 1995, Carolyn
knocked on my door and asked to see the inside ofthe house that her great
grandfather built, almost exactly, 100 years earlier. She took care in going
through each room, noticing the smallest details and then turning to me and
saying that she could feel Eli's spirit in the house. She also left behind much
of the information I used to write this article. This event has brought me full
circle and has given me a connection to Eli and his family... and this is only
the beginning. If you have any additional information about people, places
or things in this story please contact me at j ohnratto@hotmail. com.
