MMCM Prank Jones for assignment
as the command master chief at the
Naval Weapons Center (NWC).
Coming to China Lake was
almost a dream come true for the
new top enlisted penon at NWC.
"When the detailer offered me this
billet, I couldn't say yes fast enough,
I love this area." Master ChiefJones
commented.
The command master chief is a
direct link between the commander
and the enlisted penonnel on-
Center. "I'm responsible to the CO
for the momle and welfare ofall the
enlisted people assigned to NWC;
added MMCM Jones.
While he's still busy learning all
the instructions that govern day-to-
day actions at China Lake, Master
ChiefJones says thejob is filled with
challenges. There are numerous
administrative details to be attended
to. and a wide variety of meetings

A native ofthe Cloverdale, Calif.,

ting inlO the command master chief
program has been one of the high-
lights of a 28-year Navy career that
started when the Air Force recruiter
didn't come 10 work one day and the
Navy recruiter did. The rest has been
a succession of interesting and chal-
lenging lOUIS. all but one of which
has been out of a West Coast

posts onboard ship had been with the
U.S.s. Hollister and the U.S.s.

sides meet mutual needs through a
Naval career.

Bruno J. PannulO of the NWC
Public Works Departtnent's Engi-

going to replace the section of water
line between the NWC Credit Union
and the B-Mountain reservoirs. He
estimated it would take about three
months 10 complete the work once
construction began.
There have been four breaks in dIe
water line this summer. the flfSt

replacement. PannulO salCi the pipe
in question is a 24-inch mortar lined
and mortarcoatedsteel pipe. Itfailed

Corrosion ofthe pipe tookplace at
a faster ",te than expected becauseof
a combination of electrolytic and
galvanic corrosion. PannUIO said the
new pipe will be of a similar con-
Slruction, but with new protection
technology available, it should have
about a 1000year life expectancy.
The fourth and last break was on
King Street and occurred at a fining
that corroded out of the main pipe
section. This section of the water
linbe (west ofthe NWC Federal Cre-
dit Union) is considered 10 be in
good condition. Nonetheless, noted
PannulO, corrosion consullanlS from
the Western Division, Naval Engi-

OffICials in the Center's Public
Works Department feel, however,
there is linle likelihood ofadditional
water shulOffs because of broken
water mains in the near future.

ruptured sections of pipe, thus
