Roy “Ernie” Johnson
Ernie was born on April 3, 1953 in Fort Campbell,
Kentucky to Roy & Edith (Jernigan) Johnson He grew
up as a “Army Brat” living in Alaska and Germany.
‘ He attended Shelton schools graduating from Shelton
High School in 1971 and went to work for the United
States Forest Service. Ernie retired in 1997 as a Fire
~z» Management Officer and Incident commander of
Western Washington Fire Team. He was called out of
retirement to be Airspace Coordinator for the Forest
Service. His number one prioritywas the safety of
all the men working for him. Ernie was an inventor/
innovator of many things. He invented the Helitorch, which was used to
light slash
burn, an automatic hose roller, and a laser ignition system for lighting
fires. He created
prototypes of a remote helicopter to light slash burns and fire shelters
for homes. Ernie
loved his family and enjoyed spending time with his kids and grandchildren.
When h1$
children were young he built them a hovercraft to ride in, He especially
loved racing
go carts with his son, Eric, along with fishing, hunting, and was building
an airplane at
the time of his death Ernie died from natural causes on Saturday, August
13, 2005 in
Grangeville. Idaho at the age of52 years.

Friday, August 19, 2005 between the hours of9:00am and 6:30 pm or Saturday

8:00am to 12:00 noon. A memorial service will be held at the Shelton Civic
Center on
Saturday, August 20, 2005 beginning at 1:00 pm. Arrangements under the
