“Bob, we need this information circulated
to all College personnel today it’s
urgent!”
Minutes later
“Sue, Linda needs this to go out to all
staff, pronto. Thinkwe can get the word
out this morning?”
“No problem, Bob. I’ll just use the comv
puter and we should have it out to everyone
within the hour.”
“Thanks!”

Sound like the year 2001.7 Well, it’s really
just around the comer for staff at Florida
Community College at Jacksonville It’s
called “electronic mail” and is a quick
method of communicating messages in
terdepartmentally through the use of come
puters. It’s a designated “high priority” item
for FCC] and is scheduled to be in opera!
tion before year’s end.
“Communication is critical in manage
ment. A missed telephone message or note
buried beneath a stack of mail can spell
disaster," said Jack Tinsley, associate vice
president for Information Systems and
Services.
“With the use of computers, we can relay
that important message right on the departv
mental terminal and a print—out is ready in
minutes,” he said. “The quick message
mode can avoid hours of delayed response
to a crisis situation. The system will be
useful in many situations.”
Electronic mail is just one of a number of
major introductions to be made this year by
the Information Systems staff under the
leadership of Tinsley. The associate vice
president joined the College in March,
coming from East Tennessee State Universi—
ty where he served as director of computer
and information resources. Tinsley holds a
bachelor's degree in computer systems
science from the University of West Florida
in Pensacola and an MBA from the
University of North Florida.
Another Briority item on Tinsley’s list is
system relia ility during student
registration.
“We must be immediately responsive in
this area. Registration should be routine,
not a nightmare. When one class is filling
u and another is not, department
cfiairpersons should be in the position of
making a decision to create another in-
demand class slot and cancel the course
that isn’t so popular," said Tinsley.

unanimously at their May meeting to
change the name of Florida Junior College
at Jacksonville to Florida Community Col—
lege at Jacksonville. College officials are
planning a formal public announcement of
the name change in late August.
“In order to avoid confusion, we are plan—
ning to synchronize the public announce
ment of the name change with the comple«
tion of the new design of the name and
logo for production in College publications
and advertisements,” said Ann Tillinghast,
director of Public Affairs.
“We will be providing examples of the
new design to all media following its in—
troduction to College staff at Fall Convoca—
tion," she said.
More than 200 people came out to the
College’s Geis Marine Center on May
13 to tour the Lady Ellen, a three—
master Swedish sailing vessel. The ship
stopped off at the center for minor
repairs while en route to New York
Harbor to participate in the upcoming
Statue of Liberty renovation
celebration.
