On the Lighter Side
1 A priest was walking along a residential street
lined with fine old Victorian homes. It was a
bitter cold day, the sky overcast, the wide
spacious lawns covered with snow. Suddenly he
spotted a small boy on the front porch of one
i house. The doorbell was one of those old-
4
i fashioned manual types set high in the door. The
boy was too short to ring it, but was trying to
. with jumps that were ineffectual. Every now and
then he would stop and warm his hands by
breathing on them.
MARGARET TENNANT HOUSE
---, 312 CENTRAL AVENUE
SITE OF THE 100-YEAR PARTY
This is a rare opportunity to view the
interior of this fine old home, lovingly cared for
and furnished by the owners Lowell and Wilda
Northrup.
The Tennant House is named after its first
owner, Margaret Tennant, who owned several
houses on Seventh Street between Central and
Ocean View. W.P. McDougall built this house in
the Queen Anne style, with asymmetrical shape, a
variety of windows, and a round turret on the
back of the house. It was designed by William
H. Hamilton of Sacramento; John Gray was
contractor. Miss Tennant was a member of the
Guild of St. Mary's by-the-Sea in 1887. She also
built the "John Tennant Memorial Home" which
stood for years at Sinex and Forest in honor of
her beloved brother. She is remembered as
devoted citizen of Pacific Grove.
The .poor little devil, thought the priest, and
altering his direction, walked to the porch. He
patted the boy protectively on the shoulder while
ringing the bell vigorously with his other hand.
"And now what, my little man?" he said smiling
down at the boy.
"Now," said the boy breathlessly, "we run like
hell!"
