The Heritage Society of Pacific Grove P. O. Box 1007 Pacific Grove, CA 93950 Date: June 24,2002 TO: Scott Broecker 121/1254thStreet Pacific Grove, CA 93950 RE: Address: 121 / 125 4h Street Subdivision: P.G. Retreat Block: 7 Lot: 7 Our maps and tax records show that the above structure was first assessed in: 1906 This means the structure was actually built early in that year, or late in the previous year. The first owner of this structure, according to the County's assessor's records was: Melena DeWalt Other Comments: The earlier tax records listed DeWalt's name as Malena, Molina & Melena, and the 1907 city directory listed Melenie. I decided on Melena as that was the latest used on the typewritten records and she would have had time to correct the earlier handwritten errors. It appears she moved to San Francisco and married a man named Martin. They sold the property in Pacific Grove to Lila Niles. I do not know if this was her first or second marriage. The 1891 tax records indicate a house on the lot, but 1892 through 1905 indicate no structure! The 1905 Sanborn map shows a vacant lot. The house does show on the 1914 and 1926 maps. Plague Status: ® Structure is eligible for a plague and one will be made up for you at no charge. You will be notified when plague is ready. It could take 4 to 6 months. El Structure is eligible for plague, but it must be requested by the owner. Ifyou are the owner, please send a request to the above address or call The above phone number and leave a message. El Structure is not eligible for a plague at this time because: Enclosed please find: Tax assessor information through 1926. Sanborn insurance maps from 1914 & 1926. City directory page from 1926.
